Good Gardening Year in 2018 to all Members of the Gardening Club.

We are continuing our News Letter and we will try to publish one for Winter,
Spring, Summer and Autumn. This will be to advertise forth coming Meetings,
Visits and Events.

Also, to give a short report on Meetings and Visits that have been held and, to
report the results of our various Competitions.

As most of you are aware, we have discontinued some of our Events in an effort to
make the Club more manageable, namely the Village Show, Christmas Social and
our Meeting in January. However, we still hope to organise enough events, to
keep the Club interesting and warrant your support.

Report on Meetings and Visits.

The last Meeting for 2017 was held in November and
was a very interesting talk by Mary Stevenson, entitled “Country Cousins”. Mary
related how plants, trees and shrubs, growing and surviving in the wild,
compare with a similar species of plant, growing in our gardens. With a little
knowledge of the particular plant, such as where in the world it grows, what
sort of terrain and weather conditions it experiences, whilst growing in the
wild, does give a better chance on knowing what planting conditions, would be
best suited for it in our gardens at home. This is a talk Mary is keen to develop
for her repertoire of “Gardening Talks” and I am sure it will prove to be very
popular with other local Gardening Clubs and Societies.

Future Events for 2018.

We have booked the Cider Orchard Restaurant at
Hereford College for an Evening Meal on Wednesday 24th January,
6.30pm to dine at 7.0pm. The cost will be £20 per head. For those who have not
visited this Restaurant before, this is a dining experience not to be missed.

The College have given me a Menu for the Evening and
I will pass out the details to those persons wishing to join us, as we will be
required to give our choice of meal prior to the event.

Some of you have already given your names to support
the event, at the last Gardening Club Meeting, those who have not yet done so,
can you phone or Email me as soon as possible, so that I can add your name to
the list.

On Friday 9th February a visit to a
Snowdrop Garden in the Cotswolds is being arranged. We will be departing from
the Village Hall at 10.00am, stopping off at a local hostelry in the area for a
light lunch, before visiting the Gardens in the afternoon.

Again, please phone or Email me if you wish to join
us on this visit. We will be travelling by Members cars.

Our first Meeting at the Village Hall for 2018, will
be on Wednesday 21st February and our visiting Speaker will be the
very knowledgeable, Julie Ritchie, from the Hoo House Nursery, Tewkesbury.

Julie will be talking on “Hardy Geraniums” and
hopefully she will be bringing a selection of plants for sale, from her Nursery.

As mentioned at the AGM, our Membership numbers do
need to be increased, so do feel free to bring along friends and neighbours to
our Meetings. When they realise what a delightful bunch we are, they may
consider joining us.

Also, at the February Meeting we will be holding our usual Photographic Competition for
the best judged Photograph taken by Members.

There will be THREE CLASSES and Members can submit up to TWO photographs for each Class.

Class A. Dramatic Weather.

Class B. Flower Power.

Class C. Humorous Photo, with Caption.

There will be prizes for first, second and third places in the Competition, with a
Trophy being presented to the overall winner.

I trust that you will keep Charlotte our Competitions Secretary happy and support this
event. In the past the standard of Exhibits has been very good but we could do
with support from more Members.

At our Meeting to be held on Wednesday 21st March, we look forward to welcoming back
Jack Willgoss from the Wildegoose Nursery in Shropshire who will be giving a
Talk and Presentation on his “Heritage Viola Collection. For those who attended
Jack’s Talk in 2017 on extending the Season of Interest in the Garden, you will
know that he is a very passionate and dedicated horticulturalist with plenty of
good tips and ideas to assist us with our gardening.

At our Meeting on 21st March we will be holding a Spring Bulb Competition.

The Schedule for this is as follows:

The Gardening Club Web Site is being “revamped” and Jim Bennett has offered to keep
this up to date for us. This can be accessed via Eaton Bishop Village Hall Web
Site and the Madley Village Web Site.

Regards to you all and a successful year in the garden.
